eBay..Google and Product Relevance?

Hi Ed WeBBers,

I’ve just been looking at some ‘PPC’ (‘pay-per-click’) adverts…

You might have heard of these things – made famous by Google primarily, they are those adverts which you click on which are positioned on the right-hand side of Google’s search results.

You click – the advertiser gets charged, and Google makes mone-e as part of the equation.

The interesting thing about these ads is the fact that you can actually pay less than someone else – even if your result is higher (which *should* cost more).

Why?

Well, if you are more ‘relevant’ than they are, then you pay less than they do…all other things being equal.

So….Ed, why does this not apply to Asda I mean the closer I get to the checkout shouldn`t my shopping cost less ?

Actually …Doris it can but that depends, on whether you can shop lift your groceries and get through the door without that interfering alarm going off !

AHEM..

And how is ‘relevancy’ determined?

Well, the more people who click your advert, compared with the number who see it = you are more relevant.

So, if you’re ad is shown 1,000 times and you get 100 people clicking through to see ‘what it’s all about’, and your competitor only gets 50 ‘click throughs’ per 1,000 times the ad is show – then you’re more ‘relevant’ and you pay less.

This kind of thing applies to eBay too – but not directly. You won’t really pay less if you’re more ‘relevant’ – but they may well push you higher up the search results.

You see, eBay ‘copied’ (in a way) Google’s own PPC engine when they introduced ‘Best Match’.

Basically, the more well ‘matched’ you are to a search, the higher your come up.

But it’s more than that…

I always recommend, in fact, making your advert as ‘relevant’ to the category you’re placing it in as possible.

So, if you’re putting something in the category of ‘Boy’s Accessories’ and then ‘Bags’ (for example) then you’d better make sure today that you’ve got something that’s tightly ‘matched’ to that category.

Even using the exact keywords ‘Boy’s Bag’ in the title may help, since it’ll be picked

up as ‘relevant’ to the category you’re listing in.

So, does that mean you can’t now list items in ‘unrelated’ (but still potentially profitable) categories?

Not at all – you can still do that, and do well.

And that brings me to my second point of the day…

Listing in ‘alternative’ categories.

You see, if you’re listing a ‘Boy’s Bag’ (my previous example), you may want to list that in the most relevant category, with relevant keywords in the title.

But, if the item is selling well, then you might want to consider listing it in other

‘lateral’ categories too for example, the ‘Toy’ category (off the top of my head).

Bingo…as long as you try and keep your title/keywords etc. relevant to the category,

you may well increase sales without much added expense.

And that’s always a good combination!

Lets read my book, time to wind down..

A novel about a man who developed an identity crisis, and  thought he was an electric plug , i`m on the chapter now where he has just had a panic attack thinking the the maintenance man at work with the screwdriver in his hand was about to take his fuse out!

A rather DISTURBING book!!!

Well my friends and allies of my mind, don`t miss the next post when I will be reporting on  fellow internet marketer and friend Steve King and I will be reviewing his latest product  SO don`t miss out on that , or I will strike ye down with NO MORE POSTS and leave ye upset and forlorn!

( Just kidding, you mean the cyber world to me)!

BUT for now , yes its true TTFN….Ed.
