eBay Sales…A Leaf Out of Aldi and Lidls Book?

Hi Ed weBBers,

WEY HEY, i`m back, bet you missed me, you swines you, but nay i love thee really as if in a summer song…….(hey i`m a bard)?

Anyway the reason i have been away so long is due to the the vulcan Spock lock layed on me by our pointed eared friend, they really work you know!

(You`ed have to be around in the early 70`s to get that joke)?

NOW ONWARD…

Have you ever shopped at Aldi or Lidl? (I think that’s the names of ‘em)…

I know they’re ‘cheap’ supermarkets – the kind where the pizzas they sell end up tasting like a table with ketchup on.

OK, OK, so no…I’ve never tried these places , ahh ahem mmm so I really should say this…

But there we go.

Ed…them fries you made the other night tasted like wood, who are you to call Aldi and such?

Shut it…Doris, i`ve seen you before now picking the mushrooms from the back of the toilet door..mmm shes silent?

Isn`t that golden!

Anyway, turns out that these places are seeing increased sales as the ‘credit crunch’, across-the- board inflation and the on-coming recession continue to bite…

I think it’s pretty safe to say that a recession of some kind is pretty much ‘locked-in’ now.

The real question is how severe it will be from here on in.

But what about your eBaying? What will come of it in tougher times?

Relax.

And exhale.

‘Papa’ Ed  is here to help…calm you and your chi!

Seriously though, it makes sense that people will go ONLINE for ‘cheaper stuff’, if a recession does hit.

And few people can deny that THE cheapest place to get stuff (generally speaking) is eBay.

The trick is to AVOID the luxury stuff.

This is why M&S recently saw a profits warning ; their ‘luxury’ food segment (including the Applie Pies, I’m led to believe) saw a sharp downturn.

Anything to do with housing is probably worth avoiding too (and by that I mean ‘stuff’ for new houses in particular…think furniture etc.)

But the ‘good old stuff’ should remain…and sales may even rise.

Such as – the market for contraception. Yes, you know…that stuff. If you look online, you’ll find a big market for DUREX, for example.

I can’t see how this market will ‘go under’, no matter how bad the economy gets. Like-for-like sales on eBay may even rise as consumers switch to the cheapest possible provider…

My poor comedy aside, my real point is that there will always be certain markets which stay steady.

It’s up to you to find them – and provide products for consumers in those markets which they’ll continue to buy, whether there’s a boom, recession or even a depression.

So, if you’ve not started yet…or you’re thinking of starting…I’d start to ponder what markets are going to stay steady – or even see increased sales – in a tougher economic climate.

Contraception is certainly one. Umbrellas are another judging by what’s outside my window.

And there are plenty more, too…if you look hard enough and keep your ear close enough to the ground…

Talking about ears to the ground, it`s time for me to put my eyes to a book…

  1. Hi John,

    Your a classic!!

Had an interesting experience this week on ebay. Hubby decided to buy a pair of second hand boots. Looked good in the photo, we asked the right questions. We won the auction, but when we went and picked the boots up, heels were broken and burn mark on the side that were not mentioned! Sellers need to be a bit more honest about what they are selling. I contacted the poor girl whom is new to ebay and told her she needs to be a little more honest and take more photos.

Besides that experience I still love ebay and I have 2 sheds I am about to clear out!!

    See you back here soon!

    Jacinta :D

  2. Hi Ed missed the insanity and the good advice, the point is well made look for the stuff people cannot do without and sell it at a keen price, best of all if you dcan work in a niche market.

    Cheers
    Rob

  3. Hi Jacinta,

Like you say i would put the sale of them boots down to being a newbie seller, but the will soon learn the ropes when they start getting negatives..

    Thanks for your visit Jacinta…Ed.

  4. Hi Rob,

Thats me mad as a box of frogs, but yeh like you said it`s really the only way forward at the moment on eBay to be successful, and thats sell into perrenial markets!

    Thanks Rob….Ed.
