eBay..Savvy Sellers WIN,Play By Their Rules?

Hi Ed WeBBers,

I’m not a huge football fan – but have you ever heard of a player called Rory Delap?

I mention him because he has a very unusual talent – ball-juggling.

OK, OK…not ball-juggling…

It’s actually his throw-in.

He has a tremendously long throw-in that wreaks havoc in the opposition’s penalty box.

OHH….Ed, thats got to hurt, i mean the penalty box, you`re talking PAIN equal lent to  listening to Susan Boyle on X Factor!

No…Doris you fool, you`re thinking of Will Young?

Head like a Belizean beacon!

So i was saying, Mr. Delap plays for premier-league Stoke City – and last week they beat Arsenal, sending them crashing out of the FA Cup.

And do you know how the first goal was scored?

Rory Delap used his deadly ‘throw-in’ to create the first goal.

What’s really interesting though is that BEFORE the match took place, the Arsenal manager (Arsene Wenger) had talked about how he thought Rory Delap’s throw-in was a bit of cheating (effectively) -because it was almost like a corner kick.

I can’t image how peeved Wenger must have been to see that first goal go in, right off a Rory Delap throw-in…

So, OK, why the football mention today?

Well, Delap’s throw-in, of course, wasn’t ‘cheating’ at all – it’s all well within the classified ‘rules’.

But ‘rules’ are often flexible – and I’d be a bit annoyed too by Delap’s throw-in.

But here’s what I’m getting at today…

As I’m sure you know, eBay operate by certain ‘rules’ as well.

The problem: often times, you may find yourself operating in a market where the competition aren’t operating by the ‘rules’ – yet they are still operating!

What gives?

Well, this is a lesson you have to learn…

Sometimes, you may have no other option but to join them and break some ‘rules’ too – or simply go out of business (or out of that particular market, at best).

In our football example, Wenger got beat – despite having (on paper) a superior team (product).

But a ‘rule breaker’ opened the scoring, and they never looked back after that.

My point is that oftentimes you may have to operate by the same ‘rules’ as your competition

if you want to get ahead.

Maybe it could be that your competition adds a bit of ‘extra cream’ to their postage charges -

or maybe it’s something else.

But my point is the same – eventually, you may have to operate by your competition’s rules rather than the more general rules that you think you should operate by.

Otherwise you may suffer the same fate as

‘The Arsenal’ – dumped out of the competition far too early given the level of talent they have!

Well peeps time to put my talent at book reading to use..
