eBay..Stopping International Sales on Branded Goods, bring it on?
Hi Ed WeBBers,
If you’ve been ‘floating around’ eBay recently, you might have seen a slightly disturbing email come through…
It relates to what could be a future EU law/directive/whatever-they-call-them…
And the gist is this: unless you have a bricks-and-mortar store, you may (in the future) NOT be allowed to sell ‘branded’ goods online.
Ed….is there really money selling bricks and mortar, never seen them on eBay myself?
Doris…you can i bought some, and when i find the time i`m walling you in!
NOW, back to the point of my story?
In other words, unless you’ve got an actual physical shop, you won’t be allowed to sell BRANDED products on eBay.
Now…don’t worry just yet.
Because at the moment there’s no indication that this will become ‘law’ (or when – could be ages away).
And – would it even matter?
If you’re a long-time reader you’ll know that I *don’t* recommend the sale of branded goods too heavily.
There’s a market for them, to be sure, but I much prefer unique/non-branded items.
The reasons are simple…
Firstly, you can ‘change’ unique and non-branded types of goods (e.g. put your own name on them).
This way, you’re not selling exactly the same thing as someone else; you’ve got more pricing power as a result.
(Hey peeps, does this business model sound familiar to you “skincareprofitsgoldmine” )?
Anyway..Secondly, these kinds of goods are easier to source/get a supply of.
Take the alternative of *branded* goods again, where most manufacturers/wholesalers often already discriminate against you if you don’t have a shop.
Well, non-branded good wholesalers and manufacturers don’t care if you’ve gota shop or not…
Thirdly, you can get much better margins with your *own* non-branded merchandise.
Fourthly…well, I could go on but won’t.
The bottom-line is that for years plenty of eBayers haven’t touched *branded* stock (although some still do) – and have built strong businesses on the back of non-brands.
If you’re still trying to source branded stock and failing, then now may be the time to think of unique/non-branded alternatives.
And if you haven’t started yet, then I think I just told you what the best kind of products to start with are.
Best of all….unique/non-branded items can be easily sourced with your PC.
There are numerous international trade sites (Alibaba, Globalsources.com etc.) where you can find them. And there are a ton of ‘other places’ too which are full of potential products/suppliers of these ‘non-branded’ products.
So there!
What are you waiting for?
I just told you what to sell, and where to go get them – well, almost.
It’s a start though, right?
We all have to start somewhere, and the same goes for reading a book..
WELL I NEVER POODLES WALKING, BUT NOT FOR EXERCISE..(MATRON)?

Hey Ed, if this goes ahead it will be fantastic news for the sellers of Private Label Products, which is how I built my own business, higher mark ups etc with some of the branded goods its difficult to se how some sellers make any profit.
Cheers
Rob
Hi Rob,
Yeh, it will shake up the wholesalers too, who are very strict at allowing who can sell their brand!
Cheers Rob….Ed.
Hi John, I prefer to sell non branded goods any way because they are less expensive to buy and often they are every bit as good as the branded version too. Customers do not always want to pay the higher prices for branded goods either. I think I will stick to selling mostly information products and steer clear of this possible new directive! Regards Sue.
Hi Sue,
The thing to note as well, is you can sell private label products at a higher mark up than branded, because the branded markets hold far too much competition pricing each other out of the market!
Thanks Sue….Ed.
Ed, Have to say i have not touched Ebay much myself but like anything their can be alot of money made if done right. You have made me interested in doing some research on the latest development on Ebay in branded goods so i thank you for that
Hi Keldyn,
