Selling on eBay- How Importing and Exporting Affects Your Profits?

Do you know who Japan's third most successful company is?
 
It's worth about 60 billion UK spondoolies.
 
(First clue).
 
You might be familiar with its products…like the 'Wii'.
 
Got there yet?
 
It's Nintendo.
 
I remember the days of 'Duck Hunt' on the old 'NES'! But then Nintendo kind of lost their way a bit…until they dreamt up the 'Wii', and came bouncing right
back.
 
But there are issues…
 
One of which is…?
 
Nintendo, like rival Japanese games firm Sony, exports the majority of its hardware and
video games to Europe and the USA.
 
But retail prices there for their products are 'fixed'. As are distribution, retail and transport costs.
 
That means if their own *currency* fluctuates a lot, they can end up making less money even if nothing else has changed!
 
(They might even be selling more and doing better, but still make less mon-ee!)
 
That's why Nintendo recently released a statement saying they were having trouble forecasting 'pwofits', because of the wild currency swings in global markets at the moment.
 
My point?
 
Well, there may well come a point when this kind of thing impacts YOU, as an eBayer.
 
Currency movements will affect you
 
IF…
 
  • You import products from another country, e.g. the USA, China etc.
  • You export – you sell your products to foreign buyers!
 
If you think about, the above two points affect a lot of eBayers!
 
Most people source some stock from abroad, and
plenty sell to foreign buyers too.
 
If you import, then you product costs can rise if our own currency weakens.
 
But your costs may stay the same – e.g. eBay fees, paypal fees and postage. In short,
your profits can end up going down, through no fault of your own.
 
But if you export- sell to foreign buyers – then if our currency weakens, you actually end up
banking more money, for no extra effort.
 
For Nintendo, since they export most of their products, and since their currency was *strengthening* recently – that lead to a decrease in pwofits.
 
Through no fault of their own!
 
This talk of 'weakening' and 'strengthening' is a bit confusing though, isn't it?
 
Basically what you need to know is this: if you import or export a lot – you need to keep
your eye on the Great British Pound's fluctuations.
 
If it's moving around a lot, re-calculate your product/import costs, and re-calculate how much your foreign buyers are giving you.
 
Do the simple sums by going to a simple financial website to get the latest currency
prices.
 
You might be surprised that you're losing some money somewhere…and gaining some
place else.
 
The key point is to 'watch currency fluctuations' if you're an eBayer and operate (in some way – whether importing or exporting) outside the UK.
 
Time to grab that calculator I think…

Selling on eBay- Successfully against Copycat Sellers?

Hi Ed WeBBers,

Paypal is a HUGE business for eBay…
 
In fact, about a third of its overall revenue comes NOT from eBay, their listings etc,
but from the payments system – Paypal.
 
And the fees they get from that.
 
(Usually around 2-3% of EVERY transaction!)
 
But eBay are in trouble over this too – because a group of inventors are trying to sue them.
 
Whether it comes to anything, of course, is another matter entirely.
 
The 'gist' is that a group of inventors shared some 'new' technology with Paypal and eBay – who then STOLE it!
 
Who knows.
 
Says the lawyer who is helping sue eBay…
 
"This involves a trade secret theft, along with sheer patent infringement.
 
It is bad enough to take someone's technology, but it is a bit much to use it in your own
patent application."
 
In other words, eBay/Paypal ripped off the technology, then tried to patent it themselves!
 
As I say – who knows where the truth lies.
 
Regardless of that, this brings me onto people ripping YOU off – and by that I mean 'stealing' your descriptions, ideas and even photographs.
 
Unfortunately, it's very common.
 
But what can be done about it?
 
Unfortunately – not that much!
 
Yes, you can report the matter to eBay.
 
But, as you may know, they're not always bend-over-backwards helpful.
 
What I usually find: if the competitor isn't smart enough to come up with their own ideas
and description, when things 'change' (markets change etc.), they won't be smart enough
to keep up.
 
In other words, the 'copycats' are very often temporary.
 
But, in the meantime, although you can report things to eBay, you might be best waiting it out.
 
You have to feel for the inventors who are suing eBay, mind you.
 
They can't wait it out.
 
They are likely to get crushed by a huge multi-national.
 
Fortunately, YOU don't have to compete with eBay itself…just its sellers!
 
And although they can sometimes be a pain, 'copycats' are just that – copiers!
 
And they very rarely will stay on top for any length of time.
 
Just remember that the next time you think about sabotaging your copy-cat competitor's
listings!

Think about that for a moment, and i`m sure you can already kinda see where I'm going with this?

  1. YES, you can leave a video showing on social web 2.0 sites like 'You tube', that can potentially attract thousands of visitors, lets look into this deeper?Its a way of marketing your products and/or services, to your web visitors through video
  2. You can multiply your video marketing efforts, by using several video channels, communicating your marketing message!
  3. Which in turn will distribute your marketing messages to different networks, giving you massive exposure on 'your brand'!

Again…

Why do Video Marketing?

  1. Video marketing is part of the Web 2.0 communication mediums that are is so *hot* right now, and videos are traffic magnets!
  2. Video is actually the fore runner in traffic generation right now  among all these social marketing methods, like Twitter and facebook!
  3. Search engines, absolutly love video, its just *fact*, sites like Google, Yahoo, Amazon, know the power video holds and all the generous traffic video sites provide ranking them high for whatever relevant content they offer
  4. 87% of all traffic comes from the first page- (again video ranks high)!
  5. its the most rapid way to rank high on the first pages in the organic search results…proving to outperform any other SEO efforts!
  6. Theres 'little work' involved, but it still gives you quick residual targeted traffic, because video has a 'viral effect' growing visitors on autopilot'!

ALSO….

  • You can edit your videos and submit them to more websites making them 'unique content to the serarch engines, by creating even more exposure to your brand on more search results according to your website relevance, in essence you 'recycling' your videos keeping them search engine friendly and fresh!

Let me elaborate more on this, the way forward to internet success NOW, is to target small niche markets that people want the information on, for example…

Lets say you have created a 'dog training' video, you could edit it in a way where you focus on a certain aspect like..

'How to stop your dog barking constantly', showing you and your dog in the park traning the dog in this instant, you now have a tight niche content video going 'viral' on You Tube etc….building you laser targeted *free* traffic for life, all because you edited and tweaked your video focusing on one particular part of 'dog training'!

    Selling on eBay – Means Beating the Competition With a Specific Claim on Product Quality?

    AHEM..( straightening the toupee)!
     
    I've heard some big claims in marketing before, but this one…?
     
    Volvo Car Corporation's short-term target is that NO ONE will be killed OR injured in a new Volvo car by 2020…
     
    "Zero is the one and only solution for us.
     
    As the leader in car safety we can't accept that people are killed or injured just
    because they want to transport themselves from A to B," says Jan Ivarsson, head of Safety Strategy at Volvo Cars.
     
    "Our aim is to come so close to zero that one single  car accident is defined as a disaster,
    not an acceptable part of our daily lives."
     
    To me (and probably you!) it sounds like an extraordinary claim…that NO ONE be killed
    or even injured behind the wheel of a Volvo?
     
    THAT is a claim!
     
    I would have thought…and yes, I admit that I was crap at physics at school…that there were so many factors 'at play' in a car accident that you couldn't 'guarantee' this kind of
    thing.
     
    After all, people get killed in far more 'trivial' ways than motor smashes at 80mph.
     
    Alas, though, this is powerful marketing.
     
    And it perfectly 'backups' Volvo's position as the 'car for safety'.
     
    Now, I'm not suggesting you go out and make claims that could get you in trouble, with
    the products you're selling.
     
    But it's entirely possible that you can GUARANTEE a specific claim.
     
    An example: you're selling a product to help with cellulite reduction (a good niche by the way).
     
    Your more specific guarantee claim may be something like:
     
    "You must notice at least a 20% reduction in cellulite visibility within 30 days, or simply return for a full refund"
     
    Note in this case there are two specifics – a reduction percentage, and also a certain
    time-frame (qithin 30 days).
     
    Don't get me wrong.
     
    Any kind of guarantee is powerful with the items you're selling on eBay…
     
    But how can you construct an unbeatable AND over-the-top guarantee, with *specific
    claims* as to what your buyers can expect to get?
     
    When you do THAT, you create an even higher level of trust and belief in your prospects
    that you're telling the truth!
     
    As a result, doing this for products you're selling on eBay, or thinking about selling, may
    well pay serious dividends!
     
    Can you apply it?
     
    Also can you apply your attention on  Eds Foto Call….
